Riegel Community Hospital, also known as Riegel Hospital, was an old and important hospital built in 1924. It was located in Trion, Georgia. The hospital helped people for many years before it closed in 1975.
Because of its history, Riegel Hospital was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 20, 2002. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history.
In 2010, the city of Trion decided to tear down the building. The hospital had been damaged by floods and needed a lot of repairs, especially to its roof. It also contained a material called asbestos, which can be harmful if it's disturbed. So, the building was safely taken down.
A Hospital for Mill Workers
Riegel Hospital was built by a company called Trion Manufacturing Co. This company owned a local factory that made denim fabric, which is used for jeans. The hospital was built to take care of the factory workers and their families.
The hospital was named after Benjamin Riegel, who was the president of the Trion Manufacturing Co. He wanted to make sure his workers had good medical care. In the 1990s, the land where the hospital stood was given to the city of Trion.
