Rikkokushi facts for kids
The Rikkokushi (pronounced Ree-koh-koo-shee), also known as Rokkokushi, are a special collection of six history books from ancient Japan. These books tell the story of Japan's past, from its earliest myths all the way up to the year 887 AD. They are like the first official history books of the country!
What Are the Rikkokushi?
The Rikkokushi books were created by important writers at the Imperial court in Japan. This happened during the 700s and 800s. These books help us understand how Japan saw its own history long ago.
Here are the six books that make up the Rikkokushi:
- Nihon shoki (Chronicle of Japan, also called Nihongi), finished in 720 AD.
- Shoku Nihongi (Continued Chronicle of Japan, also called Shokki), finished in 797 AD.
- Nihon kōki (Later Chronicle of Japan), finished in 840 AD.
- Shoku Nihon kōki (Continued Later Chronicle of Japan), finished in 869 AD.
- Nihon Montoku Tennō Jitsuroku (True Record of Emperor Montoku of Japan), finished in 879 AD.
- Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku (True Record of Three Generations of Emperors of Japan), finished in 901 AD.
