Riley's Toffee Rolls facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Riley's Toffee Rolls are a classic sweet treat that first came out in 1907. They were created by two brothers, Fred and J.H. Riley, who used a special recipe from their mother. These yummy toffee rolls were made in their factory in Halifax, West Yorkshire, a town in England. Today, that same factory is used by a company called McVitie's, which makes biscuits.

The Story of Riley's Toffee Rolls

How the Toffee Rolls Began

The Riley brothers started their company, "Riley Brothers, (Halifax) Limited," over a hundred years ago. They wanted to share their mother's delicious toffee recipe with everyone. Their factory in Hopwood Lane, Halifax, became famous for making these popular sweets.

Changes Over the Years

For many years, Riley's Toffee Rolls were a favorite. However, in 1953, one of the brothers, J.H. Riley, passed away. The other brother decided to sell the company to another sweet maker called Nuttalls. Over time, the company changed hands a few more times and eventually became part of a big food company called Kraft PLC. The toffee rolls were then made at a different factory in Bridgend.

Why Production Stopped

In the mid-1990s, Kraft PLC made a decision to stop making Riley's Toffee Rolls. They wanted to focus more on producing another popular mint candy called Altoids. So, for a while, it seemed like Riley's Toffee Rolls were gone for good.

The Toffee Rolls Return!

Luckily, the story didn't end there! In 2008, a woman named Freya Sykes made an exciting discovery. Her Granny Ella Riley gave her an old recipe book called "Economical Cooking." Inside, Freya found a handwritten recipe for the original Riley's Toffee Rolls! It was the very same recipe that her great-uncles, Fred and J.H. Riley, had used.

Freya decided to bring the toffee rolls back to life. After making sure the recipe was legally hers, she relaunched Riley's Toffee Rolls. To fit what people like today, the new toffee rolls have a slightly softer texture, but they still have that classic taste!
