Mohammad Rivai Riza (born October 2, 1970), known as Riri Riza, is a famous Indonesian film director, producer, and writer. He is well-known for directing popular movies like Petualangan Sherina (Sherina's Adventure; 2000), Gie (2005), and Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troop; 2008). Riri Riza often works with producer Mira Lesmana. Together, they run a film company called Miles Films.

Early Life and Learning
Riri Riza was born in Makassar, Indonesia, on October 2, 1970. When he was nine years old, in 1979, his family moved to Jakarta. There, he went to LabSchool UNJ for his high school education.
Studying Film Making
In 1993, Riri Riza finished his studies at the Jakarta Arts Institute. He focused on learning how to direct films. He was a very good student. His final project film, called Sonata Kampung Bata (Sonata of the Brick Village), won third place at a big short film festival in Oberhausen in 1994. This showed his talent early on.
Riri Riza's Film Career
Riri Riza started his career in 1995. He directed two episodes of a documentary series called Anak Seribu Pulau (Children of the Thousand Islands). This was a great start to his journey in film.
First Big Movies
In 1998, Riri Riza directed his first full-length movie, Kuldesak. He worked with other directors like Mira Lesmana on this project. His first movie directed all by himself was Petualangan Sherina (Sherina's Adventure) in 2000. This film was a huge success and made him a well-known director in Indonesia.
Working as a Producer
Riri Riza also became a film producer with Mira Lesmana. As a producer, he helps make sure movies get made. One of their biggest successes was Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (What's Up With Love?) in 2002. This movie, directed by Rudy Soedjarwo, was watched by two million people. It became the most popular Indonesian movie at the time.
Writing Stories for Films
Riri Riza also studied how to write screenplays at Royal Holloway, University of London. A screenplay is the script for a movie. After his studies, he wrote his first screenplay for the film Eliana, Eliana. He has directed and written many other films, including Gie, Untuk Rena (For Rena), and 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya (Three Days to Forever).
