Mohammad Rivai "Riri" Riza (born October 2, 1970) is a famous Indonesian filmmaker. He is known for directing many popular movies. Some of his most well-known films include Petualangan Sherina (Sherina's Adventure), Gie, Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troop), and Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? 2 (What's Up with Love? 2). Riri Riza also works closely with producer Mira Lesmana. Together, they run a film company called Miles Films.

Early Life and Education

Riri Riza was born in a city called Makassar on October 2, 1970. When he was nine years old, in 1979, he moved to Jakarta. There, he went to LabSchool UNJ for his high school education.

In 1993, Riri Riza finished his studies at the Jakarta Arts Institute. He focused on learning how to direct films. He was a very talented student. His final project film, called Sonata Kampung Bata (Sonata of the Brick Village), won third place at a film festival in Oberhausen in 1994.

Career in Filmmaking

Riri Riza started his career in 1995. He directed two episodes of a documentary series. This series was called Anak Seribu Pulau (Children of the Thousand Islands).

His first full-length movie was Kuldesak in 1998. He worked with other directors like Mira Lesmana on this film. In 2000, he directed his first solo feature film, Petualangan Sherina (Sherina's Adventure). This movie was a big success and made him a well-known director.

Riri Riza and Mira Lesmana also became film producers. They produced Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (What's Up With Love?) in 2002. This movie was directed by Rudy Soedjarwo. It was watched by two million people, making it one of the biggest movies in Indonesian cinema at the time.

Riza later studied screenwriting at Royal Holloway, University of London. After that, he wrote his first movie script, Eliana, Eliana.

He has directed many other important films. These include Gie, Untuk Rena (For Rena), and 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya (Three Days to Forever).
