ACTRA Woman of the Year

Rita Shelton Deverell (born in 1945) is a Canadian TV host and a person who works for positive change in society. She helped start a Canadian TV channel called Vision TV. She also led the news team at the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) from 2002 to 2005.

Rita Deverell was born in Houston, Texas, USA. She moved to Canada in 1967. Her TV career began in 1972 when she produced a children's show.

In 1974, she became a journalist for CBC Television. She worked on a program called Take 30.

In 1983, Rita became a professor. She taught journalism at the University of Regina. Later, in 1988, she helped create Vision TV. Besides working as an executive there, she also hosted many short segments between shows. People often noticed she wore a flower in her hair when she was on TV.

Rita has also been on the board of the Obsidian Theatre Company. This company in Toronto focuses on plays by black Canadian writers. In 2021, she was named the chancellor of Lakehead University. This is a very important leadership role at the university.
