River Cúa facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Cúa River is a river in the north of El Bierzo, a region in the León province of Castilla y León, Spain. It starts in a place called Campo de la Pesca, close to the Cienfuegos port. The Cúa River then flows into the Sil River near Toral de los Vados.

Some important rivers that flow into the Cúa from its right side are the Ancares River and the Burbia River. On its left side, smaller streams join it, like the Trayecto stream, the Faro River, and the Biarzas River.

At first, the Cúa River flows from west to east. But about one kilometer after the Trayecto stream joins it, the river changes direction and flows from north to south. It passes through several towns, including Peranzanes, Fabero, Vega de Espinareda, Arganza, Cacabelos, Carracedelo, and Villadecanes-Toral de los Vados. The Cúa River is part of the Miño-Sil Hydrographic Confederation, which manages the water resources in this area.

Bridges Over the Cúa River

The Cúa River has several interesting bridges along its path.

The Historic Cacabelos Bridge

A bridge over the Cúa River, located just outside the town of Cacabelos, was the site of an important battle. This was the Battle of Cacabelos, a fight during the Spanish War of Independence. This battle happened in January 1809. It involved British troops led by Sir John Moore who were retreating to La Coruña.

The Ancient Roman Bridge

In the area of Vega de Espinareda, there are several bridges crossing the Cúa River. One of these is a very old Roman bridge. It was built a long time ago, around the 1st or 2nd century AD. This ancient bridge has been repaired because a flood caused by the river washed away part of it.
