Robbie Hedges is a former leader, known as the Chief, of the Peoria Tribe of Indians in Oklahoma. In the year 2000, she made history. She became the very first woman to be chosen for this important role.
Becoming a Tribal Leader
Robbie Hedges used to work as an office manager. When the previous Chief, Joe Goforth, stepped down, there were no other people running for the job. Robbie decided to try for the position herself.
Family Inspiration
Part of her decision came from her family. Her grandmother had a long tradition of serving their tribe. This inspired Robbie to want to help her community too. Her grandmother lived to be 108 years old!
