Robert Allott was an English editor who lived around the year 1600. He is best known for publishing a collection of poems called England's Parnassus in 1600.

It's thought that he might be the same Robert Allott who was a student and teacher at St. John's College, Cambridge. He may also be the Robert Allott who published books in the early 1600s. Some poems in English and Latin are also believed to have been written by him.

About Robert Allott

Robert Allott was the editor of a very important collection of poems from the Elizabethan era. This book was called England's Parnassus. It was published in London in 1600. The book's full title was quite long, describing it as a collection of "the choicest Flowers of our Modern Poets."

The editor's name wasn't fully printed on the title page. Only the initials "R. A." were used. However, some old records suggest that the full name "Robert Allott" was seen in some copies. This is why most people believe he was the editor.

In 1599, another book called Wits Theater of the Little World was published. This book was a collection of interesting facts and stories. At first, people thought it was put together by someone named John Bodenham. But later, it was found that Robert Allott was actually the one who compiled it. John Bodenham was likely the person who supported the project financially.

Not much is known about Robert Allott's personal life. Some historians think he was the Robert Allott who was a fellow (a kind of teacher or researcher) at St. John's College, Cambridge in 1599. There was also a book publisher named Robert Allott during that time. It's not certain if these were all the same person.

Robert Allott's name also appears on some poems published in other books. For example, he wrote two sonnets for Gervase Markham's book Devereux in 1597. He also contributed a sonnet and some Latin verses to Christopher Middleton's Legend of Duke Humphrey in 1600.

Robert Allott's Books

Robert Allott's most famous work is England's Parnassus. It's a large book, about 500 pages long. The poems inside are organized by topic, like "beauty" or "mountains." The name of the poet is written next to each poem.

Allott also put together Wits Theater of the Little World. This book is a collection of wise sayings from ancient writers. It also includes stories about famous people and summaries of historical events. It has a lot of interesting information, but it can be a bit long to read through.
