Robert Arbuthnot's Important Job

Robert Arbuthnot held a very important position called Auditor of the Exchequer in Scotland. Think of an auditor as someone who carefully checks all the money coming in and going out, making sure everything is correct and honest. The Exchequer was like the government's treasury department, handling all the country's finances.

On May 16, 1709, Robert Arbuthnot and another person named John Philp were both given this job by the King. They were appointed as "joint Auditors," meaning they shared the responsibility. They were also told they couldn't just hand their work off to someone else; they had to do it themselves.

Life and Family

Robert Arbuthnot was born in Inverbervie, a town in Scotland, in 1669. He later moved to London, where he died on August 4, 1727. He passed away in Lord Stair's house in Hanover Square, London.

After he died, his brother, Dr. John Arbuthnot, was asked to be there when Robert's papers were opened. This was to see if there was enough money or property for his wife, Elizabeth Arbuthnot, to manage. Elizabeth was the daughter of James Carnegie of Craigo, and she was in Scotland at the time.
