Robert Batty was an English doctor born on December 14, 1763, in Kirkby Lonsdale, England. He passed away on November 16, 1849, in Hastings, East Sussex, at the age of 85. He was well-known for his work in medicine and also for his love of art.

Robert Batty's Early Life and Education

Robert Batty grew up in Kirkby Lonsdale, a town in Westmorland, England. He studied hard and earned his medical degree (M.D.) from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland on August 30, 1797.

His Medical Career

After finishing his studies, Dr. Batty moved to London. There, he became a special kind of doctor called an obstetric physician. This meant he focused on helping women during childbirth.

On September 30, 1800, he was officially allowed to practice midwifery by the College of Physicians. Later, on December 22, 1806, he became a full licentiate of the college, which meant he was fully qualified to practice medicine.

Dr. Batty worked as a physician at the Lying-in Hospital on Brownlow Street. This hospital was a place where women could go to give birth. For several years, he also helped manage and edit a medical magazine called the 'Medical and Physical Journal.'

A Love for Art

Besides his busy medical career, Robert Batty had a passion for art. He was known as an amateur artist, meaning he enjoyed creating art as a hobby, even though it wasn't his main job. His son, Colonel Robert Batty, also became a well-known artist.

Family and Later Years

Robert Batty had a daughter named Elizabeth (1791–1875). She married Philip Martineau, who held an important legal position called a Master in Chancery. Their son, Robert Batty's grandson, was the famous English painter Robert Braithwaite Martineau (1826–1869).

Dr. Batty spent his final years living at Fairlight Lodge in Hastings. He passed away there in 1849. A portrait of him, painted by Dance, was later made into an engraving by Daniell.
