Robert Clutterbuck (born June 28, 1772 – died May 25, 1831) was an English historian. He spent 18 years writing a big book. This book was called The History and Antiquities of the County of Hertford.
The Life of Robert Clutterbuck
Robert Clutterbuck was born in Watford, Hertfordshire. This was on June 28, 1772. He was the oldest son of Thomas Clutterbuck. Robert went to Harrow School when he was young. Later, he studied at Exeter College, Oxford. He earned his degree in 1794.
After college, he planned to become a lawyer. He joined Lincoln's Inn, a place for lawyers. But he became more interested in other subjects. He loved chemistry and painting. He even took painting lessons from a famous artist, James Barry.
In 1798, Robert married Marianne Capper. She was the oldest daughter of Colonel James Capper. For a few years, they lived near Cardiff. Then, Robert moved back to his family home in Watford. He lived there until he passed away on May 25, 1831. He was also a county magistrate. This meant he helped with local law and order. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. This group studies old things and history.
Robert Clutterbuck's Writings
Robert Clutterbuck worked for 18 years on a special book. It was a history of Hertfordshire. The book was called The History and Antiquities of the County of Hertford. It came out in three parts. The parts were published in 1815, 1821, and 1827.
This book used many old records. It also had drawings of interesting old buildings. Some of these drawings were made by Robert himself. Other artists, like Edward Blore, also helped. They created the pictures for the book.
In 1828, Robert Clutterbuck published another book. It was about the gifts given to the parish of Watford. It was called Account of the Benefactions to the Parish of Watford. He used real documents to write it.
