Robert Crone was born in Dublin, Ireland, around the year 1718. He began his art journey at a young age. He first studied at the Dublin Society's drawing school. His teacher there was Robert West. Robert was a very good student and even won prizes in 1748 and 1750 for his work.

After his initial training, Crone continued to learn from other artists. He became a student of two portrait painters, Robert Hunter and Philip Hussey. A portrait painter creates pictures of people.

Journey to Italy and Landscape Art

Crone soon decided to focus on painting landscapes instead of portraits. Landscapes are paintings that show natural scenery like mountains, trees, and rivers. He became very successful in this type of art.

Philip Hussey, who was a relative of Crone's, helped him travel to Italy around 1750. Italy was a very important place for artists to learn during that time. In Rome, Italy, Crone studied with a famous painter named Richard Wilson. While in Rome, he also became friends with other Irish artists like James Forrester and Solomon Delane.

One person, James Martin, wrote in his journal that Crone "has chiefly studyed Claude Lorrain." Claude Lorrain was a famous French landscape painter. This means Crone learned a lot from Lorrain's style and was known for painting in a similar way.

Robert Crone stayed in Rome, Italy, until 1767. After that, he moved to London, England. In 1768, he showed two of his drawings at the Society of Arts in London.

From 1772 to 1778, Crone regularly showed his artwork at the Royal Academy. This was a very important art exhibition in London. Even though he faced some health challenges, he continued to create and exhibit his beautiful paintings.

His first paintings shown at the Royal Academy were two landscapes called Morning and Evening. He only exhibited one work in Dublin, Ireland. This was a painting called Landscape and Figures in 1770. He also exhibited drawings, some of which were inspired by Richard Wilson's style. These drawings were often done with black and white chalk on bluish-grey paper.

Today, Robert Crone's landscape paintings are quite rare and highly valued by art collectors. A few of his works are part of the Royal Collection, which is a collection of art owned by the British Royal Family.
