Robert Grahame of Whitehill (born in 1759, died in 1851) was a Scottish lawyer. He became an important leader in Glasgow. He served as the Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1833 to 1834. The Lord Provost is like the mayor of a city.

Robert Grahame was born in Glasgow in 1759. His father, Thomas Grahame, was also a lawyer. Robert followed in his father's footsteps. He trained to become a lawyer too.

Around 1797, Robert Grahame bought a large house called Whitehill House. Before him, a man named John Glassford had built and lived in this mansion.

In 1833, Robert Grahame was chosen as the Lord Provost of Glasgow. He took over from James Ewing of Strathleven. He served for one year. After him, William Mills became the Lord Provost in 1834.

By 1835, Robert Grahame was living on his Whitehill estate. He lived there with his wife and children. His father was a partner in a law firm. Robert was likely part of the same company.

Around 1845, he sold Whitehill House to a Glasgow merchant named John Reid. After selling the house, Robert Grahame moved to England.

He passed away on December 28, 1851. He died at Hatton Hall near Wellingborough.

After Robert Grahame's death, Whitehill House was bought by Alexander Dennistoun. Today, the area where the house once stood is named Dennistoun after him. A street in the area, Whitehill Street, also remembers the house.

Robert Grahame's Family

Robert Grahame married a woman named Helen Geddes. They had two sons and two daughters together. One of their sons, Thomas, married Hannah Finlay. Hannah was the daughter of Kirkman Finlay.

Portraits and Art

A famous artist named Chester Harding painted a portrait of Robert Grahame. This painting is kept at the Glasgow Resource Centre.

Another well-known artist, Sir Henry Raeburn, painted a portrait of Robert's wife, Helen.
