Robert Harrison (1796 – 23 April 1858) was a very important surgeon and a professor of anatomy. He became the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1848. The RCSI is a famous college in Ireland where doctors and surgeons learn their skills.

Robert Harrison's Early Life and Studies

Robert Harrison was born in a place called Cumberland in 1796. When he was older, he went to Trinity College Dublin to study. He graduated with a degree in arts. After that, he started learning to be a surgeon. He trained with a well-known surgeon named Abraham Colles. He also began his medical studies at the RCSI medical school.

In 1817, Robert Harrison became a Demonstrator at RCSI. This meant he helped teach students about anatomy. A year later, in 1818, he became a full member of the RCSI. He continued his studies and earned his M.B. degree in 1824. Later, in 1837, he received his M.D. degree, which is a higher medical degree.

Professor and Surgeon

Robert Harrison became a Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Trinity College Dublin in 1827. This was a big achievement! Anatomy is the study of the body's structure, and physiology is about how the body works. In 1837, he was also made Professor of Anatomy and Chirurgery (which means surgery) at the School of Physic in Trinity College Dublin.

Besides teaching, he also worked as a surgeon. He was a surgeon at Dr Steevens' Hospital and a special consultant surgeon at Jervis Street Charitable Infirmary. He also spent many years helping the Royal Dublin Society as one of their Honorary Secretaries.

Important Books by Robert Harrison

Robert Harrison wrote some very important medical textbooks. In 1824, he published a book called Surgical Anatomy of the Arteries. This book was so good that it was printed five times! It helped many students and doctors understand the arteries in the body, which are like tubes that carry blood.

He also wrote another textbook called The Dublin Dissector Manual of Anatomy. This book was a guide for students learning about the human body. Later versions of this book were even published in big cities like London and New York, showing how widely respected his work was.
