Serving on the Provincial Council

From July 1874, Robert Hughes was a representative for the Town of New Plymouth. He served on the Taranaki Provincial Council. This council was like a local government body that made decisions for the Taranaki region. He continued in this role until 1876, when the provincial government system in New Zealand was stopped.

Role in New Plymouth Borough Council

After the provincial councils were abolished, Robert Hughes continued his public service. He then joined the New Plymouth borough council. This council was responsible for managing the local affairs of the town, such as roads, parks, and other community services.

Political Involvement

In 1890, Robert Hughes decided to run for a bigger political role. He was one of three people who wanted to represent the New Plymouth area in the national election. Even though he tried his best, he did not win this election.

Personal Life and Legacy

On 1 December 1898, Robert Hughes married Amy Grace Burton in Dunedin. They were together until his death.

Robert Clinton Hughes passed away on 18 January 1935 in New Plymouth. He was 87 years old. He did not have any children, but his wife, Amy, survived him. He is remembered for his work as a lawyer and his efforts in public service and conservation.
