Robert Hyde (born October 10, 1650 – died 1722) was an English politician. He lived in Hindon, Wiltshire and Heale, Woodford, Wiltshire. Robert Hyde served in the English House of Commons from 1677 to 1707. After that, he was a member of the British House of Commons from 1708 until his death in 1722.

Robert Hyde's Early Life and Family

Robert Hyde was the second son of Alexander Hyde. His father was a very important church leader, serving as the Bishop of Salisbury from 1665 to 1667. Robert's mother was Mary Townson. Her father, Robert Townson, was also a Bishop of Salisbury, serving from 1620 to 1621.

Becoming an Adult

In 1665, Robert inherited land and property from his uncle, Sir Robert Hyde. Two years later, in 1667, he also inherited his father's estates. Robert went to Magdalen Hall, Oxford in 1666 to study. He then joined the Middle Temple in 1667, which is a place where people train to become lawyers. By 1673, he officially became a lawyer.

Robert Hyde's Marriages

Robert Hyde married Lady Finetta Pope on May 4, 1674. She was the daughter of Thomas Pope, who was the 3rd Earl of Downe. Lady Finetta passed away on October 16, 1700. Later, Robert married again. On January 26, 1704, he married Arundell Penruddock. She was the daughter of Thomas Penruddock, who was also a Member of Parliament.

Robert Hyde's Political Career

Robert Hyde was a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the country's main law-making body, the House of Commons.

Serving Hindon and Wiltshire

Robert Hyde was first elected as an MP for Hindon in 1677. He served there until 1679. He was elected again for Hindon in 1685 and continued to be re-elected in various elections until 1698.

After that, he became an MP for Wiltshire in 1702. He was re-elected for Wiltshire in several more elections:

  • 1713
  • 1715

He was even elected again in 1722. However, by this time, he was too unwell to go to the voting place himself.

Robert Hyde's Later Life

Robert Hyde passed away on April 20, 1722.
