Robert Joseph Greene's Writing Journey
Robert Joseph Greene started his writing career by sharing parts of his stories. In 2006, a magazine called Letters From Camp Rehoboth printed a piece from his story "The Journey and the Jewels." Another publication in Florida, Watermark, praised his work.
Stories for Change and Challenges
In 2012, Greene released The Gay Icon Classics of the World II. A story from this book, "The Blue Door," is about a young Russian prince who discovers his identity. Some students in Russia translated this story. They used it to protest laws in Saint Petersburg that limited how people could talk about different kinds of relationships. In 2013, Greene shared that he faced strong negative reactions from some readers in Russia because of this story.
In June 2013, a publishing company called Weltbild removed Greene's books from their stores. This company was owned by a Catholic group in Germany. They said Greene's books did not fit their "traditional values." Many people criticized this decision because the publisher still sold other books with grown-up themes.
Awards and Recognition
Greene's book This High School Has Closets was recognized in 2012. It was nominated for the Lambda Literary Awards in the category for young adult novels.
In January 2014, Greene started a campaign to get a new official term for a group of jays. He wanted Merriam-Webster's Dictionary to use "Jabber of Jays."
In April 2015, Greene was a finalist for the Vancouver Pride Legacy Turquoise Award for the Arts. This award celebrates people who make a difference in the arts.
Standing Up for Fairness
Robert Joseph Greene has also worked to promote fairness and understanding.
Complaint to Canadian Broadcast Standards Council
In February 2008, Greene made a complaint to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC). This was about a radio show called Harjinder Thind Radio Show on CKYE-FM. He felt the show was unfair to people from diverse backgrounds. Greene also said the show let callers make incorrect statements and didn't allow different viewpoints to be shared.
After looking into it, the CBSC agreed with Greene on October 23, 2008. They found that CKYE-FM and the Harjinder Thind Show had broken rules about human rights and broadcasting ethics. The radio station and show had to announce the decision and correct their actions in both Punjabi and English.
Working with the Canadian Library Association
In 2012, Greene's publisher found that some librarians were hesitant to review This High School Has Closets. They worried it might cause negative reactions from the public. This situation led the Canadian Library Association to remind everyone about their policy. This policy supports including books about all kinds of people and ideas, and it protects "freedom of expression."
