Sir Robert King (born around 1599 – died 1657) was an important Irish soldier and a leader in government. He helped shape Ireland during a very busy time in history.

Early Life and Family

Robert King was the oldest son of Sir John King. His father moved from Yorkshire, England, to Ireland in the 1580s. Sir John became a very important helper for the King and owned a lot of land across Ireland.

Robert had eight brothers and sisters. One of his brothers was Edward King, a poet. His early death inspired a famous poem called "Lycidas" by John Milton.

A Career in Government

Sir Robert King had many important jobs. He was the Muster Master-general and Clerk of the Cheque in Ireland. These roles meant he was in charge of checking soldiers and managing money for the government.

In 1621, he was made a knight. This was a special honor given by the King. He also became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish House of Commons. He represented areas like Boyle and County Roscommon. An MP is someone elected to speak for the people in government.

Political Changes and Loyalty

Sir Robert King was involved in politics during a time of big changes in England and Ireland. King Charles I of England did not trust Robert King's loyalty. Because of this, the King removed him from his job as Muster Master-general.

Later, when the King's side lost power, Robert King decided to support Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell became a very powerful leader in England. Robert King joined Cromwell's Council of State in 1653. He also served in the First Protectorate Parliament for several Irish counties.

People saw Sir Robert King as a fair politician. He was known for being willing to work with different groups. His main goal was to protect the interests of the Protestant people in Ireland.

Family Life and Legacy

Sir Robert King was married twice. His first wife was Frances Folliot. They had at least two sons and one daughter. Frances passed away in 1638.

His second wife was Sophia Zouch. She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne of Denmark. With Sophia, he had a daughter named Elizabeth.

After Sir Robert King died, his oldest son from his first marriage, John, took over his family's position. John later became the 1st Lord Kingston. Another son, also named Robert, became Sir Robert King, 1st Baronet. His daughter Mary married twice and had children.

Sir Robert King's second wife, Sophia, lived many years after him. She died in England in 1691.
