Robert Maclagan was born on December 14, 1820. His parents were Jane Whiteside and David Maclagan. His father was a well-known doctor in Edinburgh, Scotland. Robert grew up in a big house in the center of Edinburgh.

He went to the Royal High School in Edinburgh. He also studied at the University of Edinburgh. After that, he attended a special military school near London called Addiscombe Military Seminary. In 1839, he joined the East India Company. This was a large British trading company that also had its own army. He then went to another school to become a military engineer. In 1842, he arrived in Delhi, India, to start his career.

Career in India

In 1846, Robert Maclagan was in charge of building defenses for the city of Lahore. This was a very important job. After a serious illness, he was given less demanding work. He started running a college for civil engineering in Rurki when he was only 27 years old.

In 1857, there was a major rebellion in India. Robert Maclagan successfully defended Rurki against the rebel forces. He showed great leadership during this difficult time. Throughout his military career, he rose through the ranks. He eventually became a General, first in the Bengal Engineers and then in the Royal Engineers.

In 1853, he was chosen as a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a famous group for scientists and thinkers. Later, in 1861, he became the head of the Public Works Department for the entire region of Punjab. This meant he was in charge of building and maintaining public things. These included roads, bridges, and buildings. Queen Victoria recognized his hard work. She made him a Knight, which is a special honor.

Later Life and Honors

Sir Robert Maclagan retired from his work in 1879. He spent his final years traveling between Edinburgh and London. He passed away in 1894. His dedication to engineering and military service left a lasting impact.

Sir Robert Maclagan came from a notable family. His brothers included Andrew Douglas Maclagan and William Maclagan. William later became the Archbishop of York.
