Robert Sabatier: A French Writer

Robert Sabatier was a talented author from France. He wrote about many things. His books often explored memories and feelings. He was known for his clear and thoughtful writing style.

Growing Up in Paris

One of Sabatier's most famous works is a series of novels called "Roman d'Olivier." These books tell the story of a boy named Olivier. They describe what it was like growing up in a poor part of Paris in the 1930s. It's like reading a diary about his childhood.

A very popular book from this series is Les Allumettes Suédoises. This title means The Safety Matches. It was so popular that it was even made into a TV show in France. This book alone sold over 200,000 copies! Other books in the series include "Olivier 1940" and "Les Trompettes Guerrières."

A Poet's Voice

Robert Sabatier was also a respected poet. In 1955, he won a special award for poetry called Le Prix Guillaume Apollinaire. This shows how much his poems were admired.

Some of his poems have been translated into English. They appeared in a book called Modern European Poetry. Two of his well-known poems are "Vegetal Body" and "Mortal Landscape." His poetry often talked about memories and how life can be divided. One line from his poem "Mortal Landscape" asks:

  • "The bird is flown, the monster not yet born, where shall we go in this demolished world?"

A writer named Willis Barnstone said that Sabatier's poems show deep feelings. He wrote that the sadness in Sabatier's poems comes from earlier happy times. These happy memories stayed with him like a dream.
