Robert Sidney (born December 17, 1649, died November 11, 1702) was an important English nobleman. He was the son of Philip Sidney, the 3rd Earl of Leicester. His mother was Lady Catherine Cecil. Robert Sidney later became the 4th Earl of Leicester himself.

Robert Sidney's Life

As a child, Robert Sidney and his sister Dorothy had their picture painted. A famous artist named Sir Peter Lely painted their portrait. Robert Sidney is remembered at St John the Baptist Church in Penshurst.

In 1698, Robert Sidney became the Earl of Leicester. This meant he inherited a special title and land from his father. He married Lady Elizabeth Egerton. She was the daughter of John Egerton, the 2nd Earl of Bridgewater. Robert and Elizabeth had four sons together:

  • Philip Sidney (1676–1705)
  • John Sidney (1680–1737)
  • Thomas Sidney (1681 – 1729)
  • Jocelyn Sidney (1682–1743)

Three of his sons later became Earls of Leicester after him. His youngest son, Jocelyn, was the last person to hold this specific Earl of Leicester title in their family line.

Robert Sidney's memorial can be seen at Penshurst. His tomb is in Penshurst Church. It was designed by William Stanton and finished by William Woodman.

What Titles He Held

Robert Sidney held two main titles during his life. He became the 4th Earl of Leicester in 1698. This was a very important title in England. He held this title until he passed away in 1702.

He also held the title of Baron Sydney. He became Baron Sydney in 1689. He held this title until 1702, the same year he died.
