Robert Thomas Barton (born November 24, 1842 – died January 17, 1917) was an important lawyer and politician from Virginia. He wrote many books and articles about law and history. He also served as the president of the Virginia Bar Association, which is a group for lawyers in Virginia.
Early Life and Education
Robert Thomas Barton was born in Winchester, Virginia. When he was younger, he served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. All five of his brothers also served in the war, and sadly, two of them died.
After the war, in 1865, Robert Barton became a lawyer. This means he "was admitted to the bar." He quickly became one of the best lawyers in Virginia.
A Career in Law
Barton was not just a lawyer; he also wrote important books about law. These books were like textbooks for other lawyers and students. Two of his most famous books were Barton’s Law Practice and Barton’s Chancery Practice.
He also worked on a special two-volume set of books called Virginia Colonial Decisions. These books contained old court records from Virginia between 1728 and 1741. This collection became a very important resource for understanding Virginia's history in the 1700s.
Public Service and Leadership
Robert Barton was also involved in politics and community leadership.

Robert Barton was married twice. His first wife was Katie Knight, whom he married in 1868. Later, in 1890, he married Gertrude W. Baker. He and Gertrude had two children together. Robert Thomas Barton was buried in the Mt. Hebron cemetery.
