Robert Bagnall's Life and Work

Robert Bagnall's career was closely linked to his religious training and church work. He studied at the Bishop Payne Divinity School in Petersburg, Virginia. After finishing his studies, he became a priest in 1903.

Church Leadership

After becoming a priest, Bagnall led several churches along the East Coast. In 1911, he became the leader, or Rector, of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Detroit.

From 1921 to 1933, he was the Dean of the School of Religious Education for Colored People. This school helped train others in religious education. In 1933, he became the Rector of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He stayed there for the last ten years of his life. During this time, Bagnall helped the church grow stronger and more active. He and his wife, Lilian Anderson Bagnall, even helped the St. Thomas Episcopal Church move to a new location.

Fighting for Civil Rights with the NAACP

Robert Bagnall was one of the people who started the Detroit branch of the NAACP in the 1910s. The NAACP is a group that works to ensure equal rights for all people. As a spokesperson for the NAACP, he led important efforts against:

  • School segregation (keeping Black and white students separate)
  • Police brutality (unfair treatment by the police)
  • Discrimination at the Ford Motor Company (unfair treatment of workers based on race)

His hard work in Detroit made him well-known within the NAACP. In 1918, he was promoted to a role where he helped recruit new members in the Great Lakes area.

In 1921, he was promoted again and moved to New York City. There, he became the National Director of Branches for the NAACP. This meant he helped lead all the different NAACP branches across the country.

However, during the Great Depression in 1933, many organizations faced money problems. The NAACP had to reduce its staff and salaries. Because of this, Robert Bagnall resigned from his position at the NAACP that year.
