Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Wroth (born August 27, 1660 – died February 4, 1720) was an important figure in British history. He was a brave soldier in the British Army and also a politician. He served in the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons from 1705 until his death in 1720.

Early Life and Military Career

Robert Wroth was the son of Sir Henry Wroth, who lived in Durants, Enfield, Middlesex. Robert decided to join the British Army in 1685. He was a dedicated soldier and worked his way up through the ranks. By 1710, he had achieved the high rank of Major-General.

A Career in Politics

Robert Wroth was elected to serve as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Guildford in Surrey. An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the House of Commons, which is part of the British government.

Wroth served three times as an MP for Guildford:

  • His first term was from 1705 to 1708.
  • He was elected again in October 1710. However, his election was challenged by an election petition (a formal complaint about the election results). Because of this, he lost his seat in February 1711.
  • He was re-elected without anyone running against him in a special election in 1717. He then held this position until he passed away in 1720.

Public Service and Family

Besides being a soldier and a politician, Robert Wroth also held important public jobs for life. From 1715, he was a Clerk of the Green Cloth, and by 1716, he was also a Clerk of the Household. These roles involved managing parts of the royal household.

Robert Wroth owned a large estate called the manor of Worplesdon, which was about three miles (5 km) north of Guildford. He was married to Knightly, the daughter of Humphrey Wyrley. Together, they had two sons and three daughters.
