Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta (born August 23, 1943 – died February 20, 1992) was a soldier and politician from El Salvador. He was known for his role in the Salvadoran Civil War. In 1981, he helped start a political party called the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA). He also served as the President of El Salvador's assembly that wrote the country's laws from 1982 to 1983.

Early Life and Military Career

Roberto D'Aubuisson was born in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. This was on August 23, 1943. His father was a salesman, and his mother worked for the government.

He finished military school in 1963. He was part of a group of military officers called "La Tandona." In 1972, he received training in communications. This training happened at a school in the United States. After his studies, he worked in military intelligence for El Salvador.

Involvement in Political Groups

D'Aubuisson became involved with groups known as "death squads." These groups were active in El Salvador in the 1970s. In October 1979, a group of officers took over the government. This event was called a coup d'état. After this, D'Aubuisson was removed from the military. However, he secretly continued to work with some military leaders.

In May 1980, D'Aubuisson and others were arrested. They were found with weapons and documents. These documents showed they were planning to take over the government. D'Aubuisson was soon released from prison. Many military commanders voted for his release.

His actions against the new government made him well-known. In 1981, he started the ARENA political party. This party had very strong conservative views. D'Aubuisson gained support for his firm stance against certain political groups. He was also seen as good at planning ways to fight against rebel groups.

1982 Election and Assembly Role

On March 28, 1982, El Salvador held an election. This election was for a group that would write the country's new laws. D'Aubuisson's ARENA party won many seats. They became the main group in the assembly.

D'Aubuisson was then chosen as the President of this assembly. The previous government ended in May.

Later, in March 1983, D'Aubuisson was allowed to visit the United States. The U.S. government said there was no proof of certain accusations against him. However, documents released later showed that U.S. officials knew about some of his actions.

Presidential Campaign

In March 1984, D'Aubuisson ran for president of El Salvador. He lost the election in May. The winner was José Napoleón Duarte. D'Aubuisson received 46.4 percent of the votes. Duarte received 53.6 percent. D'Aubuisson claimed the election was unfair.

In December 1984, D'Aubuisson visited Washington D.C. He received an award from several groups. The award was for his "efforts for freedom."

Later Life and Death

After his party lost the 1985 elections, D'Aubuisson stepped down as leader. He was given the special title of party president for life.

Roberto D'Aubuisson passed away on February 20, 1992. He was 48 years old. He had been battling a serious illness.
