Roberto Payró's Books and Stories
In 1895, Payró collected some of his newspaper articles and published them as a book called Los italianos en la Argentina (which means The Italians in Argentina). His travel notes and observations also became novels, such as La Australia Argentina (Southern Argentina), which was about his trip to the coasts of Patagonia. He also wrote Tierra del Fuego e Islas de los Estados (The Land of Fire and Islands of the States) and En las tierras del Inti (In the Lands of the Inti). Besides newspapers and books, he wrote for Caras y Caretas, a popular magazine at the time.
Payró as a War Correspondent
Roberto Payró was also a correspondent in Europe during the First World War. This meant he reported on the war from afar. He was very active in meetings with other writers who shared his socialist ideas, like Leopoldo Lugones and José Ingenieros.
What Was Payró's Writing Style Like?
In his novels, Payró used a special ironic style. He often wrote about everyday people and common situations. He showed the lives of Italian immigrants and the lively Creole people in Argentina. For example, in his book Divertidas aventuras del nieto de Juan Moreira (Amusing Adventures of the Grandson of Juan Moreira), he tells the story of a person from a small town and their journey in politics.
He also wrote historical novels, which are stories based on real historical events. One example is El falso Inca (The False Inca). He also wrote a series of short stories known as Pago Chico (Little Village). After he passed away, another collection of his stories, Nuevos cuentos de Pago Chico (New Tales of Little Village), was published.
