The Rockefeller Building is a historic tall building in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It was built between 1903 and 1905. This building stands at the corner of West 6th Street and Superior Avenue. It is right across from the Tower City Center complex. The building is 212 feet (64.62 meters) tall. It has 17 stories above the street. The building is named after John D. Rockefeller, who founded the Standard Oil of Ohio company. This very wide building acts as an entry point into the popular Warehouse District, Cleveland. In 1973, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
John D. Rockefeller was very important in making Cleveland a strong industrial city. Many places in the city are named after him. These include Rockefeller Park, the Rockefeller City Greenhouse, and Rockefeller Avenue. However, his namesake building is the most famous reminder of the Cleveland billionaire. Rockefeller was known for being very generous to his hometown. His gifts and money spent on Cleveland projects and parks are still felt today.
The Building's Name Story
The name "ROCKEFELLER" is clearly shown on the West 6th side of the building. This has been true since 1905. But there was a short time when the name changed. In 1920, another Cleveland businessman named Josiah Kirby bought the skyscraper. He started a large mortgage company called Cleveland Discount Company. When he bought the building, he changed its name to the Kirby Building.
However, Josiah Kirby made the Rockefeller family upset by doing this. So, the Rockefeller family bought the building back in 1923. They quickly changed the name back to "ROCKEFELLER." That sign is still very easy to see today. Its design has not changed much since 1923.
