Rockingham, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rockingham is a small, unincorporated community located in eastern Ray County, Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's usually governed by the county. Rockingham is also part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area, which means it's close to the big city of Kansas City.

Where is Rockingham Located?

This small community is found in the U.S. state of Missouri. You can find Rockingham along Missouri Route AA. It's about 1.3 miles west of the line that separates Ray County and Carroll County. The town of Richmond, Missouri, is also nearby, about eleven miles to the southwest.

The History of Rockingham

Rockingham has a simple but interesting history. A post office was opened in the community in 1888. Having a post office was a big deal for a small community back then, as it was a central place for people to send and receive mail. This post office served the area for several years before closing in 1904.

The community got its name from Rockingham County, Virginia. Many of the first settlers who came to this part of Missouri had moved from that county in Virginia. Naming the new community "Rockingham" was a way to remember their former home.
