What is an Unincorporated Community?
An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the larger county it's part of. This means that services like roads, schools, and emergency help are managed by Chowan County for the people living in Rocky Hock.
Location and Geography
Rocky Hock is found in the northeastern part of North Carolina. It's quite close to the coast. The land in Rocky Hock is very low, with an elevation of only 26 feet (about 8 meters) above sea level. This low elevation means it's not far from the water.
How Rocky Hock Got Its Name
For a while, there were three different possible names for this community. To avoid confusion, the Board on Geographic Names stepped in. This board is a group in the United States government that decides the official names for places like towns, rivers, and mountains. In 1982, after looking at the options, they officially decided that the community would be called Rockyhock. This made sure everyone used the same name for the area.
