Sir Roger Camoys was an important English soldier and diplomat. He lived a long time ago, during a period called the Hundred Years' War. In 1453, which was the final year of this war, he held a special job as the last Seneschal of Gascony. This meant he was like a main leader or governor for the English lands in a place called Gascony, in France.

Who Was Roger Camoys?

Roger Camoys was born into a noble family. He was the second son of Thomas de Camoys, 1st Baron Camoys and Elizabeth Mortimer. He became a knight before 1427. Being a knight meant he was a trained soldier who served the king.

Early Military Career

Roger Camoys was part of the English army. In 1436, he helped the soldiers protecting the city of Calais. This was during a time when the English and French were often fighting. Later, in 1444, French forces captured Roger.

Serving as Seneschal of Gascony

In July 1453, Roger Camoys was given the important job of Seneschal of Gascony. This was a very challenging role. The English were losing control of their lands in Gascony. Roger quickly tried to send more soldiers to important cities like Bordeaux and Libourne.

End of the Hundred Years' War

The city of Bordeaux was under attack. Roger Camoys had to negotiate for the English. He arranged for the English and local lords to surrender safely. This happened after a long siege. This event marked the end of the Hundred Years' War.

Later Life and Challenges

After the war, Roger Camoys faced more difficulties. England itself entered a period of civil war. This conflict was known as the Wars of the Roses. Roger was held as a prisoner in Calais during this time. He passed away around 1473.
