About Roméo Elvis
Roméo van Laeken was born in Uccle, Belgium, on December 13, 1992. He comes from a family of artists who speak French. His father, Marka, is a singer. His mother, Laurence Bibot, is a comedian. His younger sister, Angèle, is a famous singer.
Roméo was interested in music from a young age. He developed his own unique style. He grew up in Linkebeek, near Brussels, and later moved to Forest.
His Education and Early Career
After primary school, Roméo went to Saint-Luc Tournai Institute. There, he learned to paint and draw. During this time, he started rapping with his friends. He continued his art studies at ESA 75 in Brussels, focusing on photo-journalism. While studying, he kept rapping and became friends with the group L'Or du Commun.
When his first mini-albums came out, Roméo Elvis worked as a cashier at a supermarket. Even with some success in music, he wasn't earning enough money from rapping alone. Before his album Bruxelles arrive was released, he quit his job. He then focused completely on music.
In 2016, Roméo and producer Le Motel released the mini-album Morale. This was a big step for his music career in Belgium and France. After Morale, they released the album Morale 2 in March 2017. A special double album, Morale 2luxe, followed in February 2018.
In 2019, Roméo Elvis worked with the French sports brand Lacoste. They created a special clothing collection together. That same year, he released his first solo album, Chocolat. This album featured other artists like Matthieu Chedid and Damon Albarn.
In 2020, there were some public discussions about Roméo Elvis's behavior. He later apologized for what he called "inappropriate" actions. Even though no official complaints were made, some brands and artists stopped working with him.
In 2022, Roméo Elvis released his second solo album, Tout peut arriver.
Roméo Elvis's Music Style
Roméo Elvis's music style has changed over time. His first two mini-albums had an old-school hip hop sound. But working with producer Le Motel on Morale and Morale 2 changed his style a lot.
Now, he uses more choruses and electronic sounds. He also mixes in jazz elements from Le Motel. This gives his music a more modern feel.
Who Inspired Him
Many artists have influenced Roméo Elvis. The Belgian group L'Or du Commun, where he started rapping, is one of his main inspirations. You can hear their style in his early music. He also often mentions rapper Caballero as a big inspiration. They met while recording Bruxelles arrive.
For French rap, Roméo Elvis looks up to Alpha Wann from the group 1995. He calls him "the rap master" for how he uses words. Fuzati, from Klub des Loosers, also influences Roméo. He likes Fuzati's darker style and how he makes fun of life. Roméo also mentions the masked rapper in some of his songs. He is also a fan of the French artist Philippe Katerine.
Concerts and Tours
Roméo Elvis started performing concerts when he was close to L'Or du Commun. But his tours really began after Morale was released in 2015. He and Le Motel performed 19 shows across Belgium, France, and Luxembourg.
The release of Morale 2 led to an even bigger tour. They had 29 performances and played at major festivals. These included Dour Festival, Rock en Seine, le Printemps de Bourges, and Garorock.
Personal Life
Roméo Elvis has tinnitus. This is a condition where you hear ringing or buzzing in your ears. It's common among musicians. He has mentioned this in some of his songs, like L'oreille sifflante and Ma tête. He once said that if he earned a lot from rapping, he would donate money to help fight this condition.
