Early Life and Music Journey
Roméo van Laeken was born on December 13, 1992, in Uccle, Belgium. He comes from a family of artists who speak French. His father, Serge Van Laeken, is a singer and songwriter known as Marka. His mother, Laurence Bibot, is a comedian. His younger sister, Angèle, is a famous singer-songwriter.
Roméo was interested in music from a young age. He grew up in Linkebeek, near Brussels, and later moved to Forest. He developed his own unique music style, different from his family members.
Education and Early Rap
After primary school, Roméo went to Saint-Luc Tournai Institute. There, he learned to paint and draw. During this time, he started rapping with his friends. He continued his art studies at ESA 75 in Brussels, where he studied photo-journalism. While studying, he kept practicing rap and became friends with members of the group L'Or du Commun.
Becoming a Full-Time Musician
When his first EPs were released, Roméo Elvis worked as a cashier at a supermarket. Even with some success, he wasn't earning enough money from rap alone. Before his album Bruxelles arrive came out, he quit his job. He then focused completely on his music career.
In 2016, Roméo Elvis and producer Le Motel released the EP Morale. This album was a big step for Roméo's music career in Belgium and France. After Morale, they released the studio album Morale 2 in March 2017. This album was re-released in February 2018 as a double album called Morale 2luxe.
In 2019, Roméo Elvis worked with the French sportswear brand Lacoste. They created a special limited collection together. That same year, he released his first solo album, Chocolat. This album featured guest artists like Matthieu Chedid and Damon Albarn. In 2022, he released his second solo album, Tout peut arriver.
Music Style and Inspirations
Roméo Elvis's music style has changed over time. His first two EPs had an old-school hip hop sound. When he started working with producer Le Motel on Morale and Morale 2, his style changed a lot.
Now, he uses more catchy choruses and electronic sounds in his music. He also blends his rap with jazz influences from Le Motel. This gives his songs a more modern feel.
Who Inspired Roméo Elvis?
Many artists have influenced Roméo Elvis. The Belgian group L'Or du Commun was one of his first inspirations. He started rapping with them. You can hear their style in his early projects.
He also often mentions rapper Caballero as a big inspiration. They met while recording Bruxelles arrive. Roméo Elvis thinks Alpha Wann from the group 1995 is a "rap master." He admires how Alpha Wann uses words in a meaningful way.
Fuzati, the leader of Klub des Loosers, also influences Roméo. Fuzati's dark humor and way of looking at life have inspired Roméo. Roméo Elvis has even mentioned Fuzati in some of his songs, like Drôle de décision. He is also a fan of the French artist Philippe Katerine.
Concerts and Tours
Roméo Elvis started performing at concerts when he was close to L'Or du Commun. In 2015, after Morale was released, Roméo Elvis and Le Motel began touring. They had 19 shows in Belgium, France, and Luxembourg.
The release of Morale 2 led to an even bigger tour. They performed 29 shows and played at major music festivals. These included Dour Festival, Rock en Seine, le Printemps de Bourges, and Garorock.
Personal Life
Roméo Elvis has a condition called tinnitus. This means he hears ringing or buzzing sounds in his ears. It is common among musicians. He has mentioned this condition in his songs, like L'oreille sifflante and Ma tête.
