Romolo Murri
Romolo Murri, an important Italian politician and priest.

Romolo Murri (born August 27, 1870, in Monte San Pietrangeli – died March 12, 1944, in Roma) was an Italian politician and a priest. He was a very important figure in Italy. Many people see him as a pioneer of what is now called Christian Democracy. This is a political idea that mixes Christian values with democratic principles.

Romolo Murri's Life and Ideas

Romolo Murri was born in a small town in Italy. He became a Catholic priest. He believed that the Catholic Church should be more involved in helping ordinary people and in politics.

Starting New Groups

In 1894, Romolo Murri helped start a group called the FUCI. Later, in 1901, he helped create the Italian Christian Democracy movement. In 1905, he was involved in forming the National Democratic League. He also started several publications, which are like magazines or newspapers. These included "Vita nova" (1895), "Cultura sociale" (1898), "Il domani d'Italia" (1901), "Rivista di cultura" (1906), and "Il commento" (1910).

Disagreements and New Paths

Romolo Murri had strong disagreements with the leaders of the Church. After many discussions, he was no longer allowed to act as a priest in 1907. He then founded the National Democratic League. In 1909, he ran for election and was chosen to be a member of the Chamber of Deputies, which is part of the Italian Parliament.

Because of his political actions and disagreements, he was formally removed from the Church in 1909. In 1912, he married Ragnhild Lund in Rome. She was the daughter of a former president of the Lagting, which was the upper house of the Norwegian Parliament. They had one son together. After this, Romolo Murri focused on journalism. In 1943, he made peace with the Church. However, Pius XII, who was the Pope at the time, did not ask him to change his past political or social beliefs.
