Rory Cowan is an Irish actor and entertainer. He is well-known for playing Rory Brown in the popular TV show Mrs. Brown's Boys from 2011 to 2017. He also starred in the movie Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie in 2014. Since 2019, Rory has played the character John Bosco Walsh in the Irish TV show Fair City.

Early Life and Education

Rory Cowan was born in Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Rory Cowan Sr. and Esther Cowan. The Cowan family lived in different places in Ireland, including Dublin, Athlone, and Limerick. Rory went to school at St Benildus College in Stillorgan.

Starting His Career

Rory's mother wanted him to work in banking, but Rory chose a different path. He started working in a record shop. He later became a marketing manager for a music company in Ireland. In this role, he helped manage musicians and performers.

Working with Brendan O'Carroll

While working in the music industry, Rory first met Brendan O'Carroll. Brendan O'Carroll is the creator of Mrs. Brown's Boys. After Rory left his job in 1992, he suggested Brendan O'Carroll for a show. This led to Rory becoming Brendan's publicist, helping to organize his shows.

Becoming Rory Brown

Brendan O'Carroll later created the character of Rory Brown specifically for Rory Cowan. At first, Rory was busy with the behind-the-scenes work, organizing shows and bookings. The character of Rory Brown was first heard on radio. Another actor played Rory Brown on stage, but when that actor left suddenly, Rory Cowan was asked to step in. Even though he had never acted on stage before, Rory took on the role. His performance quickly became very popular.

Television Appearances

In 2016, Rory Cowan joined the Irish version of the TV show Gogglebox, called Gogglebox Ireland. He appeared alongside actress Deirdre O'Kane.

Leaving Mrs. Brown's Boys

On June 16, 2017, Rory Cowan decided to leave Mrs. Brown's Boys. He announced his departure the following month. He said that he left on good terms and finished a stage tour of the show. However, he did not appear in the 2017 Christmas special.

Joining Fair City

In 2019, Rory Cowan joined the cast of the RTÉ TV show Fair City. He plays the character of John Bosco Walsh in the popular series.

Dancing with the Stars

On December 7, 2023, it was announced that Rory Cowan would be a contestant on the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars in Ireland. He competed with his dance partner, Jillian Bromwich. They were the first couple to be eliminated from the competition.
