Rory Gamble's Leadership Role
In November 2019, Rory Gamble became the leader of the United Auto Workers (UAW). The UAW is a large union that represents workers in the car manufacturing industry. He took on this important role after the previous president left.
First African-American President
Rory Gamble made history by becoming the first African-American president of the UAW. This happened about a month after a big event called the 2019 General Motors strike. During this strike, many workers stopped working to ask for better conditions.
Guiding the UAW
When Rory Gamble became president, the UAW was going through a challenging time. He worked hard to make sure the union stayed strong and independent. He helped put new rules in place to make sure the union was run fairly. These changes included having a special person watch over the union's operations for several years. They also made it possible for union members to directly choose their leaders.
Retirement and Recognition
Rory Gamble retired from his position as president on June 30, 2021. After his retirement, Ray Curry took over as the new president. In July 2022, the UAW honored Rory Gamble by giving him the title of "President Emeritus." This title is given to a former leader who has done great things for the organization.
