Rosa de Montúfar y Larrea-Zurbano (1783 – 12 November 1860) was an important noblewoman from Quito. She was the daughter of Juan Pío Montúfar and a key figure in the fight for Ecuador's independence.

About Rosa de Montúfar

Rosa de Montúfar was born in Quito in late 1783. Her exact birth date is not known. Her parents were Juan Pío de Montúfar, who was the second Marquis of Selva Alegre, and Josefa Teresa de Larrea y Villavicencio. Rosa was baptized on December 17, 1783.

She was the fifth of six children. Two of her siblings, Juan José and Juan, sadly did not live to be adults. Her other siblings were Francisco Javier, Carlos, and Joaquín.

In 1790, when Rosa was just seven years old, her mother passed away. Her uncle, Domingo Larrea y Villavicencio, left her some valuable jewels. Later, in 1798, her father asked for her to receive money from a special will. This will was meant to help noble but poor girls. Even though Rosa's family was important, she received some of these benefits.

Rosa was known as a distinguished lady. She had a proud way of carrying herself and bright blue eyes. She also had a very strong and determined personality. Her father made sure she received an excellent education. This education helped her successfully manage her family's properties between 1809 and 1812.

Her Marriage and Children

On January 24, 1815, Rosa de Montúfar married Vicente Aguirre y Mendoza. He was a general who supported independence. Together, they had two children.
