The Rose Center is a cool place in Morristown, Tennessee. It's a community cultural center where people can learn and enjoy art. This center is inside the historic Rose School building. The school was built way back in 1892. It was special because it was Morristown's very first public high school where both boys and girls could learn together.
History of Rose School
The Rose School building was finished in 1892. It was named after a judge named James G. Rose. He was in charge of the school board when they started planning the new school. For many years, this building was home to both the elementary and high school students in Morristown.
In 1916, the high school moved to its own separate building. But the Rose School continued to be an elementary school. It stayed open for young students until 1975. After the school closed, the red brick building got a new life.
Local people wanted to save the building. They decided to turn it into a museum and cultural center. This big community effort happened around the time of the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976. That was a special celebration of 200 years since the United States was founded. In 1976, the Rose School was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical building that should be protected.
What You Can Do at Rose Center
The Rose Center is run by a group called the Rose Center Council for the Arts. This group is made up of volunteers who started in 1976. The center has many different spaces for activities. There are art galleries, rooms for meetings, and classrooms for learning. It also has a separate auditorium for shows and events.
The Rose Center often has exhibits about local history. These exhibits teach visitors about the past of Morristown. They also host changing art shows, so there's always something new to see. You can even take classes there! They offer classes for both kids and adults. The center also hosts many special events throughout the year. Some of the rooms, like the Jean Keener Community Room and the Edith Davis Gallery, are available for community events. The Edith Davis Gallery even displays old photos from the Hal Noe Collection.
