Rose Hill is a beautiful old house in Louisville, Kentucky. It was built a long time ago, before the American Civil War. This type of building is called antebellum architecture. In 1980, Rose Hill was added to a special list called the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical building.

The house is located about three miles (5 km) from Downtown Louisville. You can find it in the Douglass neighborhood, which is part of Louisville's Highlands area. It's just off Bardstown Road.

What Does Rose Hill Look Like?

Rose Hill is a two-story house made of brick. It was built in the Italianate style, which was popular in the 1800s. The main part of the house is square and has a small tower on top called a cupola.

A second two-story section extends from the back of the main house. This makes the house look like the letter "T" from above. The front of the house is very balanced and even, which is called "symmetrical." This formal design is quite unique for houses in Louisville.

A Look Back in Time: The History of Rose Hill

Rose Hill was built in 1852 for a man named Emory Low. He was a merchant from Massachusetts who sold dry goods in Louisville. At one point, he owned a whole block of Main Street in the city!

Sadly, while Rose Hill was still being built, Emory Low had an accident. He was killed when a wall fell on him. Because of this, the house's future was uncertain for a while. His wife didn't move into Rose Hill until 1867.

The house was built on a large piece of land that Emory Low owned. This land was originally part of a military land grant. In 1908, the land around Rose Hill was divided into smaller plots. Now, the house is surrounded by a residential neighborhood.

In the 1940s, the Seelbach family owned Rose Hill. However, from the late 1950s until 1975, the house was not well cared for. It fell into disrepair, meaning it became run down. But in 1975, a graphic design company moved in and helped bring the house back to life.
