Rosewood facts for kids

Rosewood is a special type of wood that comes from trees in a group called Dalbergia. These trees are known for their beautiful, often reddish-brown wood. Rosewood is very popular because it's strong, durable, and often has a lovely, sweet smell.

Types of Rosewood Trees

Brazilian Rosewood

One famous type is called Brazilian rosewood. Its scientific name is Dalbergia nigra. People also call it "Bahia rosewood." This wood is known for its deep color and a strong, sweet scent that can last for many, many years. It was once very common in Brazil.

Indian Rosewood

Another important kind is East Indian rosewood, or Dalbergia latifolia. In Indonesia, it's sometimes called sonokeling. This tree originally comes from India. Madagascar Rosewood

From the island of Madagascar comes Madagascar rosewood, or Dalbergia maritima. It's also known as bois de rose, which means "wood of rose" in French. This wood is highly valued for its beautiful red color. Because it's so popular, too many of these trees have been cut down. There are rules in place to protect them, but sometimes these rules are not followed. It's important to protect these trees so they don't disappear.

Southeast Asian Rosewood

In Southeast Asia, trees like Dalbergia oliveri are harvested for woodworking. This wood also has a pleasant smell. Sometimes, another similar tree, Dalbergia cultrata, is used and sold as D. oliveri.

For example, during the Ming Dynasty in China, skilled craftspeople made amazing wardrobes and other pieces from a type of rosewood called huanghuali. These pieces are still admired today for their craftsmanship and the wood's natural beauty.

Rosewood is also used for decorative items, carvings, and even Chess pieces. Its unique grain patterns and colors make every item crafted from it special.
