The Ross Knox House is a beautiful old home in Mobile, Alabama, United States. It was built in 1929. This two-story house looks like something from a fairy tale! It is built in the Tudor Revival style. Experts at the Alabama Historical Commission think it is one of the best Tudor Revival homes in Mobile. The house was designed by an architect named John Platt Roberts. It is located in an older neighborhood called County Club Estates.

What is Tudor Revival Style?

The Ross Knox House looks like a classic English cottage. From the front, it seems like a one-story house. But if you look at the back, you'll see it actually has two full stories!

Special Features of the House

  • The roof has very steep gables. These are the triangular parts of the wall that support the roof.
  • It has half-timbering. This means there are wooden beams on the outside walls. The spaces between the beams are filled with stucco, which is a type of plaster.
  • The chimneys are big and stand out.
  • The windows are casement windows. These open outwards like a door.

History of the Ross Knox House

The house has had a few different owners over the years. Each owner added to its story.

Early Owners

  • In 1933, Ross Knox bought the house. He was the president of a company that made barrels and other wooden items.
  • He sold the house in 1942.

The Inge Family

  • In 1959, a local judge named Herndon Inge, Jr. bought the house.
  • He lived there for more than 40 years.
  • Judge Inge was a soldier in World War II. His experiences were even shown in a famous TV documentary called The War by Ken Burns.

Recent History

  • After Judge Inge, the John A. Roberts Jr. family bought the house in 2002.
  • On December 30, 2008, the Ross Knox House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important historical building.
