Discovering Shapes and Geometry
Roswitha Blind studied mathematics at the University of Stuttgart. She earned her Ph.D. degree in 1974. Her special area of study was convex geometry and discrete geometry. These are types of math that look at shapes and how they fit together.
The Blind–Mani Theorem
One of her most famous achievements is the Blind–Mani theorem. In 1987, she worked with another mathematician, Peter Mani-Levitska. They solved a big puzzle in the world of shapes. They proved that the structure of certain shapes, called simple polytopes, is completely described by their graphs. Imagine a graph as a map showing all the connections of a shape. This discovery was very important for understanding complex shapes.
Blind Polytopes
In 1979, Roswitha Blind also introduced a new group of shapes. These are sometimes called the Blind polytopes. They are special because all their faces are regular shapes. This means all sides and angles on each face are the same. These shapes are similar to other well-known shapes like semiregular polytopes.
Helping Her Community
Roswitha Blind also spent time helping her community. She became a city councillor in Stuttgart in 2004. A city councillor helps make decisions for the local area.
Working for the Social Democratic Party
In 2009, she became the chair of the local council group for the Social Democratic Party of Germany. This meant she led the group of politicians from her party in the city council.
Supporting Youth Sports
To help young people in her district, she became the chair of a local football club in 2006. The club was called 1. FC Lauchhau-Lauchäcker. She also served as the president of the Stuttgart Sports Forum. This group helps organize sports activities in the city.
Roswitha Blind retired from politics in 2014. She also stepped down from her position with the football club in 2016.
