The Rotary Trail is a cool half-mile park in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. It's a straight path that connects different parts of the city. The Birmingham Rotary Club helped pay for most of it. They did this to celebrate their 100th birthday!
The trail goes from 20th Street to 24th Street. It links up Railroad Park and Sloss Furnaces, which is a famous old place. The trail opened in 2016. At the start of the trail, there's a huge sign. It says "Rotary Trail in the Magic City." This sign looks like an old one that used to be in Birmingham.
Trail History
The Rotary Club wanted to do something big for their 100th year in 2013. They promised $2.5 million for a major public project. Their idea was to turn an old railroad cut into a green space for people. A railroad cut is like a trench dug for train tracks.
The City of Birmingham also helped a lot. They gave $2 million from a special federal grant. This money helped improve drainage, streets, and other important things. Many other groups also gave money to make the trail happen.
The Rotary Trail and its big sign officially opened on April 6, 2016. Later, in November 2019, a public sculpture called "Frank's Table" was added. You can find it at the eastern end of the trail.
The Magic City Sign
The big sign at the western entrance says "Rotary Trail in the Magic City." This sign is a special tribute to an older "Magic City" sign. That old sign used to be a famous landmark in Birmingham.
A company called BL Harbert International donated the sign. The raw materials for the sign were given by O'Neal Steel.
