History of Rowe
Rowe was created in the late 1870s and early 1880s. Its main purpose was to provide workers for the Santa Fe Railroad. This railroad was very important for travel and trade back then.
Most of the people who came to live in Rowe moved from a village called Las Ruedas. Las Ruedas was about 2 miles (3.2 km) away, located by the Pecos River. A special pipe was built to carry water from Las Ruedas to Rowe. This water was needed for the steam engines used by the railroad.
Eventually, Las Ruedas disappeared as a village. By 1880, most of its former residents had moved and settled in Rowe. The old site where Las Ruedas used to be is now privately owned land.

Around 2001, a special library service called a bookmobile visited the community. A bookmobile is like a library on wheels that brings books and other materials to people. At that time, Rowe did not have its own permanent library building.
The Native American Preparatory School was also located nearby. It operated from 1995 until it closed in 2002. This school was close to another community called South San Ysidro.
