Para rowing is a cool sport where athletes with disabilities race boats using oars. It became a part of the Paralympic Games at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. Just like in the Summer Olympics, the International Rowing Federation (also known as FISA) is in charge of the rules and events for Para rowing.

What is Para Rowing?
Para rowing is a special type of rowing designed for athletes with physical disabilities. It allows them to compete fairly. Athletes are grouped into different categories based on their abilities. This makes sure everyone has a chance to win!
Types of Races
In Para rowing, there are different types of boats and races. These are based on how much an athlete can use their body. Here are the main categories:
Race Type | Athlete Category | First Year at Paralympics |
Men's Single Sculls | AS (Arms and Shoulders) | 2008 |
Women's Single Sculls | AS (Arms and Shoulders) | 2008 |
Mixed Double Sculls | TA (Trunk and Arms) | 2008 |
Mixed Four Coxed | LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms) | 2008 |
Mixed Double Sculls | LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms) | 2024 |
- AS (Arms and Shoulders): Athletes in this group mostly use their arms and shoulders to move the boat. They have limited or no use of their legs and trunk.
- TA (Trunk and Arms): These athletes use their trunk (body) and arms to row. They have some use of their trunk but limited or no use of their legs.
- LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms): This group includes athletes who can use their legs, trunk, and arms. They have some disability but can use all parts of their body for rowing.
Race Distances
At the Paralympics, all Para rowing races are 1,000 meters long. This is a straight course on the water. For comparison, Olympic rowing races are usually 2,000 meters long.
How Athletes Qualify
Not every team can compete at the Paralympic Games. There's a limited number of spots available. The International Rowing Federation holds special events to decide which teams get to go. Each country can only send one boat for each event. This means only the very best rowers from each country get to compete!
Medal Winners
Many countries have won medals in Para rowing at the Paralympics. Great Britain has been very successful, winning many gold medals. China and Ukraine have also done very well.
