Rowing at the Summer Paralympics is a special kind of rowing for athletes with disabilities. It's called Para rowing. This exciting sport first joined the Summer Paralympic Games in 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China.

Rowing itself has been a sport at the Summer Olympics since 1896 Summer Olympics. For both the Paralympics and the Olympics, Para rowing is managed by the International Rowing Federation. This group is also known as FISA, which comes from its French name.

Para Rowing Events and Categories

Para rowing has different events based on how much an athlete's body can be used to power the boat. This makes sure the competition is fair for everyone.

Discipline Event Year Introduced
Men's single sculls AS (Arms and Shoulders) 2008 (originally called A)
Women's Single Sculls AS (Arms and Shoulders) 2008 (originally called A)
Mixed Double Sculls TA (Trunk and Arms) 2008
Mixed Four Coxed LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms) 2008
Mixed Double Sculls LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms) 2024

Understanding the Categories

  • AS (Arms and Shoulders): Athletes in this category use only their arms and shoulders to row. Their boats are designed to help them balance.
  • TA (Trunk and Arms): These athletes use their trunk (body) and arms to row. They have more movement than AS rowers.
  • LTA (Legs, Trunk and Arms): This category is for athletes who can use their legs, trunk, and arms. They have the most movement and power.

Race Distances in Para Rowing

The distance for Para rowing races has changed over time.

Past Race Distances

From the first Para rowing events in 2008 up to the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, all races were 1000 meters long. This is a straight course on the water.

Current Race Distances

Starting with the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Para rowing races became longer. They now cover a 2000-meter course. This is the same distance used for rowing events at the Olympic Games.

How Athletes Qualify for the Paralympics

Not every team can compete in Para rowing at the Paralympic Games. There's a limited number of spots available.

Qualification Events

To decide which teams get to race, the International Rowing Federation holds special qualification events. These events are like big tryouts where teams compete to earn their spot.

One Boat Per Event

At the Paralympic Games, each country can only send one boat for each event. For example, a country can have one men's single sculls boat, one women's single sculls boat, and so on. This rule ensures many different countries can participate.
