A Look Back: How Royal Oaks Began
The land where Royal Oaks now stands used to be Andrau Airpark, an airport that closed in 1998. A company called Sunrise Colony Co. decided to turn this land into a new community. They chose this spot because it was close to many important places, like business areas (especially the Westchase business district), The Galleria for shopping and fun, and even the city's main airports like George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport. Many different home builders helped create the houses in this community.
What You'll Find at Royal Oaks
Royal Oaks Country Club is located near Richmond Avenue and Wilcrest Avenue. The community was planned to have about 900 homes, including some very large "estate" houses. These homes were designed in many different styles.
The community is very secure. It has a special gatehouse that watches who comes in and out 24 hours a day, every day of the week. A tall wall also surrounds the entire community to keep it private and safe.
Who Lives Here?
In 2007, Royal Oaks was known for attracting many wealthy families from Mexico. These families often prefer to live in communities with gates and private security, as it feels similar to the safe neighborhoods they might have lived in back home in Mexico.
Services for Residents
People who live in Royal Oaks have access to some cool technology, like a special internet network just for the community. They can also choose from different types of club memberships, such as ones for golf, sports, spa treatments, or just social events and swimming.
Learning and Schools
Public Schools
Families living in Royal Oaks are part of the Alief Independent School District. Even though Royal Oaks has some of the most expensive homes in the district, not many children from the community actually attend Alief ISD schools.
Children living here usually go to:
- Outley Elementary School
- Budewig Intermediate School (This school is named after a firefighter and cost a lot to build!)
- O'Donnell Middle School
For high school, students in Alief ISD are chosen through a lottery system. This means they could go to Elsik, Hastings, or Taylor. The district also has two special "magnet" schools, Kerr High School and Alief Early College High School, which offer unique programs.
Private Schools
As of 2019, a private school called The Village School, located in the Energy Corridor area, offers a bus service for students living in Royal Oaks Country Club.

Royal Oaks is a great place for sports and recreation! It has a huge golf course designed by famous golfer Fred Couples. There's also a large clubhouse, a sports club with a spa, a tennis complex, and a swimming center. You can even find a restaurant right there in the club.
