A Look Back at Royalty
How Royalty Got Its Name
Before 1929, Royalty had a different name: Allentown. It was named after an early landowner in the area. Later, when a post office opened, the name changed to Royalty.
Growing and Shrinking
In 1933, only about 20 people lived in Royalty. Even with a small population, it had several important places. These included a hotel, a drugstore, a café, a pool hall, a barbershop, and a laundry.
Royalty's population grew a lot by 1940. It reached its highest point with about 750 people living there. This growth was likely because of activity in the nearby oilfields.
However, as oilfield work slowed down, fewer people were needed. By 1968, the population had dropped to around 190 people. In 1990, it was reported to be 196. The number continued to fall, reaching 29 people in 2000. Today, fewer than 50 people live in Royalty.
Education for Students
Students who live in the Royalty area go to school in the Grandfalls-Royalty Independent School District. This school district serves the children from both Grandfalls and Royalty.
