Roystonea lenis is a type of palm tree. It is found only in Guantánamo Province in eastern Cuba. This means it is endemic to that area.
What it Looks Like
Roystonea lenis is a very tall palm tree. It can grow as high as 20 meters. That's like a six-story building!
Its trunk is usually grey-white. It is also quite wide, about 35 to 47 centimeters across. Near the top, the leaves wrap around the trunk. This forms a smooth, green part called a crownshaft. This crownshaft is usually about 2 meters long.
Each palm has about 15 leaves. These leaves can be very long, up to 5.8 meters. They spread out almost flat from the trunk. The stems that hold the leaves are called petioles. They are short, only about 0.2 to 0.7 centimeters.
The palm produces white flowers in large bunches. These bunches can be about 1 meter long. Both male and female flowers grow on the same plant. When the fruit ripens, it turns black. Each fruit is small, about 11 to 14 millimeters long. It is also about 8.8 to 11.1 millimeters wide.
