Becoming a Leader
Paredes became a leader in Panama's National Guard in March 1982. This happened after a time of change in the country. He took over after Colonel Florencio Flores. This was after the death of Omar Torrijos, another important leader.
Paredes was in charge of the National Guard until August 1983. During this time, he was promoted to the rank of general.
Leaving Power
In August 1983, General Paredes decided to step down. He had disagreements about how the government was dealing with the United States. He retired from the Panamanian National Guard.
He had an agreement with Manuel Noriega, who was another powerful military figure. The deal was that Paredes would become president. However, after Paredes resigned, Noriega did not keep his promise. Paredes was even arrested for a short time.
