Rubí Rodríguez facts for kids
Rubí Elena Rodríguez Moreno is a brilliant Chilean mathematician. She works in the math and statistics department at the University of La Frontera. She helped start the Iberoamerican Congress on Geometry. This is a big meeting for mathematicians from Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. Rubí Rodríguez also used to be the president of the Chilean Mathematical Society. This society helps mathematicians in Chile.
Her special areas of study in mathematics include:
- Complex geometry: This is a type of math that studies shapes using complex numbers.
- Fuchsian groups: These are special groups of transformations. They are used to study certain geometric shapes.
- Riemann surfaces: These are special kinds of surfaces. They help mathematicians understand complex functions.
- Abelian varieties: These are complex geometric objects. They are important in advanced algebra and geometry.
Becoming a Mathematician
Rubí Rodríguez studied hard to become a mathematician. She earned her master's degree in mathematics in 1975. She got this degree from the Universidad Técnica del Estado in Chile.
Later, she went to the United States for more studies. She earned her Ph.D. in 1981 from Columbia University. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a field. Her special research for her Ph.D. was about "Schottky-Type Groups." Her professor, Lipman Bers, helped her with this work.
Working as a Professor
Rubí Rodríguez worked at the University of Santiago, Chile. However, in 1985, during a difficult time in Chile, she was asked to leave her job. The reasons were not clearly stated. Many of her friends and colleagues supported her. They asked for her to be rehired. Because of their support, she was soon hired by another university. This was the Federico Santa María Technical University.
She also led the Chilean Mathematical Society. She was its president from 2006 to 2010. This shows her important role in the math community in Chile.
Books by Rubí Rodríguez
Rubí Rodríguez has also written and edited important math books. She is a co-author of the book Complex Analysis: In the Spirit of Lipman Bers. This book was first published in 2007. A second edition came out in 2013. She wrote it with Irwin Kra and Jane Piore Gilman.
She also helped edit another book. It is called Lipman Bers, a Life in Mathematics. This book was published in 2015. She worked on it with Linda Keen and Irwin Kra. These books help other mathematicians learn and grow.
