Rubí Rodríguez facts for kids
Rubí Elena Rodríguez Moreno is a brilliant Chilean mathematician. She works in the math and statistics department at the University of La Frontera. She also helped start the Iberoamerican Congress on Geometry and used to be the president of the Chilean Mathematical Society.
Rubí is an expert in several cool areas of math. These include complex geometry, which deals with shapes and spaces using complex numbers, and Riemann surfaces, which are special kinds of surfaces used in advanced math. She also studies Fuchsian groups and abelian varieties, which are important in higher-level geometry.
Learning and Studying
Rubí Rodríguez earned her master's degree in mathematics in 1975 from the Universidad Técnica del Estado. Later, she went to Columbia University in the United States and got her Ph.D. in 1981. Her big research project for her Ph.D. was about "Schottky-Type Groups" and how they relate to Riemann Surfaces. Her professor, Lipman Bers, guided her work.
Her Work and Career
Rubí Rodríguez worked at the University of Santiago, Chile. However, in 1985, during a time when Augusto Pinochet was in charge of Chile, she was let go from her job. The reasons weren't clearly stated, but it was likely because of political reasons. Many of her friends and colleagues spoke up for her. After their efforts, she was hired by the Federico Santa María Technical University.
She was also the president of the Chilean Mathematical Society for four years, from 2006 to 2010. This is a big role where she helped lead the math community in Chile.
Books She Wrote
Rubí Rodríguez has written or helped write important math books:
- She co-wrote a book called Complex Analysis: In the Spirit of Lipman Bers. This book is about complex analysis, a branch of math, and it honors her former professor, Lipman Bers. The first edition came out in 2007, and a second edition was released in 2013.
- She also helped edit another book called Lipman Bers, a Life in Mathematics. This book, published in 2015, tells the story of Lipman Bers's life and his contributions to mathematics.
