Rubens Oscar Sambueza (born on January 1, 1984) is a former professional footballer from Argentina. He played as an attacking midfielder, which means he helped create scoring chances for his team. In October 2013, Rubens became a Mexican citizen.

Rubens has a younger brother named Fabián, who is also a professional footballer.

Rubens Sambueza's Football Journey

Starting at River Plate

Rubens Sambueza began his football career at River Plate, a famous club in Argentina. He joined their youth teams and worked his way up. He played his first game for the main team on November 30, 2003. Rubens was part of the River Plate team that won the Clausura 2004 title. During his time there, he played 49 games and scored three goals.

Playing in Mexico and Brazil

Rubens then went on loan to other clubs.

  • In 2007, he moved to Mexico to play for UNAM Pumas. He played 35 games and scored 4 goals for them.
  • In 2008, he went on loan to Flamengo in Brazil. He wore the number 10 shirt, which was special because a club legend named Zico used to wear it. Rubens played 7 games for Flamengo.

Time with Estudiantes Tecos

In 2009, Rubens returned to Mexico to play for Estudiantes Tecos. He quickly became an important player for the team. He played 86 matches and scored 9 goals during his time there. His last game for Tecos was on April 16, 2012. After 37 years in the top league, Estudiantes Tecos was moved down to the second division.

Success at Club América

Rubens Sambueza joined América, another big club in Mexico, on May 30, 2012. He reunited with his old coach, Miguel Herrera.

First Season with América (2012–13)

Rubens played his first game for América on July 28, 2012. He scored his first goal a week later. He quickly became a fan favorite. In his first season, he played 16 matches, scored four goals, and helped with three assists. Fans even voted him the club's best midfielder!

In the Clausura 2013 tournament, Rubens continued to play well. He helped América win its eleventh league title, which was Rubens' first league title in Mexico.

More Success (2013–14)

Rubens kept showing his skills in the Apertura 2013 season. He often helped his teammates score goals. On October 5, he assisted a goal in a big match against Guadalajara, known as the Súper Clásico. He even scored two goals in one game against Puebla on October 26. Fans voted him América's best player for that tournament.

Final Season with América (2016–17)

Rubens played his last game for América in the Apertura Final. He was sent off the field during the game, and América ended up losing. After this, he moved to Toluca.
