Ruby Spowart, born in 1928, is a famous Australian photographer. She is known for her amazing pictures of the Australian outback. She took these photos during more than 40 trips across Australia and New Zealand. Ruby is a highly skilled photographer. She has earned the title of "Triple Master of Photography." She is also a Fellow and Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

Ruby studied art at the Queensland College of Art. She also earned a diploma in visual art from Queensland University of Technology. In 1982, she helped start the Brisbane Imagery Gallery. She showed her art there until 1995. Ruby has created many different types of photos. These include special color photos from the 1980s. She also made large photo mosaics in the 1990s. Since 2000, she has created many photobooks.

In March 2009, Ruby Spowart was one of six Australian female photographers celebrated by the AIPP. Other celebrated photographers included Bronwyn Kidd, Kate Geraghty, Karen Gowlett-Holmes, Lyn Whitfield-King, and Jackie Ranken.

Her Amazing Photography

Ruby Spowart has created a huge collection of artworks. She used many different techniques over the years.

  • Polaroid Photos: In the 1980s, she made large 10x8 inch color photos using Polaroid film. She also created multi-image works with Polaroid SX-70 cameras. These looked like many small pictures joined together.
  • Landscape Art: During the 1980s and 1990s, she made huge landscape pictures. Some of these were "pseudo-panoramas." She also created "camera toss mosaics." These were made by throwing the camera and taking pictures. She also made large photo mosaics.
  • Books of Art: From 2000 to 2012, Ruby created many special artist's books and photobooks.

Many of Ruby Spowart's most famous works won awards from the AIPP APP Awards. Her pictures taken with Kodak High Speed Infrared film and a Leica M2 camera are especially well-known. Many of these photos show the Australian outback. They often have a sepia tone, which is a reddish-brown color. Her son, Doug Spowart, printed many of her photographs.

Throughout her career, Ruby Spowart has won many awards. These include several prizes from the McGregor Prize for Photography. Her skill and unique style have made her a respected figure in Australian photography.
